We all know how much the weather can wreak havoc on our skin. The sun's rays can be damaging, but they're also an essential source of vitamin D, while the winds of winter can make skin dry and dull, neither of which is ideal. The dry air can result in oilier skin as our bodies try to self-regulate and combat the effects (I'm sure many of you have experienced oily T-zones).
This combination can complicate our skincare routine, so we consulted the experts for a few remedies. The first step in maintaining healthy skin is establishing a routine, but with so many products out there, it can be tricky to decipher which ones to use. Knowing that everyone has unique needs, we listed a few suggestions from dermatologists and beauticians to help you find the right moisturizer for your combination skin type.
Dermatologist Harold Lancer, MD, works on Rodeo Drive, where he treats patients with names you may recognize. He developed his own line of products called Lancer Skincare, and the Nourish moisturizer is the most popular item. The "normal" formula, complete with anti-aging benefits, is perfect for combination skin.
The DNA Renewal line from Dr. Ron Moy in Beverly Hills is designed to work with supplements to repair DNA damage to skin. The lightweight intensive moisturizer also strengthens the barrier to help skin absorb better while combatting environmental culprits.
AVYA Skincare focuses on antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients to keep your skin looking radiant, and it was co-founded by Dr. Tanuj Nakra, MD. He recommends the day moisturizer made with peony, turmeric, and neem extract to help stabilize melanin levels while niacinamide helps repair the skin.
Podcaster Kasey Boone, owner and lead aesthetician at Glow Skincare, has a few other suggestions. First, the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask is amazing for all skin types. She even sleeps in it herself several times a week: "It has watermelon extract to soothe the skin and give it an amazing fragrance, hyaluronic acid to hydrate without clogging, and aha to exfoliate and brighten the skin."
Boone also understands the precarious situation that oily skin can leave you in. She tells MyDomaine, "People with combo to oily skin think they need to steer clear from moisturizer, but doing so can actually produce more oil and lead to breakouts and clogged pores. But Mystic from CosMedix is a lightweight spray-on hydrator that doesn’t feel heavy at all. This is great for mornings, nights, as well as on the go, to give you a little midday pick me up! I even like to use this over my makeup, as it acts as a setting spray."
In a similar vein, the CosMedix Serum 16 is another great option that Boone highly recommends. "It feels creamy on the skin and acts as a hydrator, but also has retinol in it, hello anti-aging!" she notes.
Looking for a more robust formula with natural ingredients? The Probiotic Daily Moisturizer from Pierre F may be for you. Boone describes the product further: "Oil-free, full of probiotics, lemon, cucumber, and hyaluronic acid to give your skin the nutrients it needs as well as soothe the skin. This is a great everyday moisturizer that won't make you break out, and you always free hydrated after."
Matthew Miller is aptly known as the "king of glow," and he has a few tips on how to achieve radiant skin. First, there's Shineless Moisturizer by Cosmedix: "Shineless is oil-free but contains ingredients like trehalose, which attract moisture to the skin. Lilac stem cells help control oil production and reduce redness in the skin. Niacinamide helps improve the skin's natural barrier function."
CosMedix clearly features a number of useful products for combination skin, and Miller’s next recommendation is the brand's Reboot Overnight Hydration Complex. It contains probiotics to help hydrate and balance the skin for a healthier-looking complexion.
If your skin runs dry rather than oily, Miller asserts that the Protini Peptide Cream would work for you. Peptides are simply part of the chemical makeup that keep your skin firm; though it's meant for dry skin, it can work for all skin types.
If you're looking for a lightweight but effective moisturizer, Miller suggests Pink Cloud Rosewater Moisture Cream, which contains ingredients like rose water, aloe, and white tea extract. "All these ingredients work together to hydrate the skin without giving it a greasy appearance," he says.
To help improve pores, try the Skin Balancing Invisible Finish Moisture Gel. "It's a gel hydrator with antioxidants, vitamin C, niacinamide, and sodium hyaluronate," he notes. "Perfect for hydrating skin, protecting it from environmental aggressors, all while improving the appearance of pores!"
Hydration plays into your skin's health, so this Pür Cloud Cream Gel to Water Hydrating Essence Moisturizer is a great find. "It's super light and not sticky, and it has green algae extract that actually protects skin from environmental damage including pollution and visible blue light," Miller tells MyDomaine.
SkinBetter also offers a Hydration Boosting Cream, a lightweight moisturizer that helps support a healthy skin barrier. Miller boasts about its ceramides and botanicals lipids, which will keep your skin refreshed.
Another great multi-use option is the Hydrating Accelerator from Josh Rosebrook. "It's a lightweight hydrator, toner, and moisturizer all in one product," describes Miller. "Aloe and other herbal anti-inflammatories work to calm the skin and reset skin natural healing. Skin is left plump and hydrated, but not oily!"
The sun is a particularly pesky foe but your skin will win the battle with Aloette's Correction Code. Miller calls it a great daily moisturizer/SPF combo.
